As a Cognitive Behavioral therapist, I help people learn to notice and work with their thoughts when they are having a negative reaction to something in their life.  As a mother, attending to my thoughts about the many things that are happening with my kids, and/or in my family, is one of the most important ways I lower the amount of emotional suffering I experience.  After much practiced mindful awareness, I KNOW that my automatic, knee-jerk reaction thoughts are often negative and fear-based.  I know that leaving the present moment of what I'm dealing with and wandering into the implications of this moment for the future, or the implications about the job I am doing as a mother, or any number of judgments or predictions is completely unhelpful.  It makes me feel worse and I really can't know any of it.  The one thing I KNOW is that Everything Changes.  It does.  My mind wants to jump ahead and predict and prevent but I have been wrong enough and surprised enough to know I CAN'T KNOW.  Everything changes again and again.  It's easy to remember that when they were babies and I thought this or that issue was a huge problem, it could suddenly change through nothing I did or didn't do.  Being less reactive to my thoughts and focusing myself on what is NOW is a daily practice.  No need to freak out; no need to keep myself from enjoying all the other aspects of my life; everything will change and then change again.
